Ashlyn Harris opened up about struggling with Adderall addiction while attending the University of North Carolina.

“I was getting really heavily addicted to Adderall and misusing it,” Harris, 39, recalled on a recent episode of the “Question Everything With Danielle Robay” podcast. “I loved to party. I loved being out. I was just taking it all the time. I would go days without sleeping. It was wild.”

She added, “I felt like I was gonna give myself a heart attack. I was crushing it. I was snorting it. It was so problematic.”

As she continued taking the drug, which is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), she realized it was having other effects as well.

“Then I was like, ‘Oh, it makes me skinny. It curbs my appetite,’” the retired soccer player remembered. “It was just a toxic, toxic time for me because it was the first time that I started to have my character tested because I started to get injured.”

Harris credited her college coach, Anson Dorrance, with helping her make a change.

“It got really, really dark, and I had to make some serious adjustments,” she explained. “And Anson would have me read books. I started reading this book called [Man’s Search] for Meaning, and it's about suffering and reframing it — and it changed my life.”

After graduating from UNC in 2009, Harris went on to play soccer professionally for teams including the Washington Spirit, Orlando Pride and NJ/NY Gotham FC. She announced her retirement from the sport in November 2022.

Soccer Star Ali Krieger Says She’s ‘Never Felt More Happy’ After Divorce From Ashlyn Harris

Elsewhere in the podcast, Harris opened up about her relationship with Sophia Bush and her split from ex-wife Ali Krieger. Harris and Krieger, 40, tied the knot in 2019 and later adopted kids Sloane and Ocean. After their 2023 split, Harris moved on with Bush, 42, while Krieger is now dating Jen Beattie.

“I think it comes to a point where you are at the end of the rope,” Harris said of the period before her divorce. “And you either put it around your neck or you drop it. That’s where I was.”

When host Danielle Robay asked whether Harris was really “that unhappy,” the former goalkeeper replied, “I was miserable. I wanted more for myself and I wanted more for my children on what their expectation of love is.”

She continued, “How am I gonna try to teach my 4-year-old daughter about being, like, strong and independent and loving her body and her inner self and her inner worth and all these things when I f***ing hated myself?”

Soccer Stars Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger’s Relationship Timeline

Harris made similar comments last month during an interview on Rachel Bilson’s “Broad Ideas” podcast, explaining that she’s still grieving her relationship with Krieger.

“I will have that conversation with my children, eventually, and let them know happy people don’t leave happy marriages. They just don’t,” Harris said at the time. “You don’t just wake up all of a sudden one morning and say, ‘Well, this is the day, I’m over it.’ There is a process and there is a grieving component of thinking about this, but it’s a very, very scary decision.”

NEED TO KNOW

Jodie Sweetin got candid about her struggles with alcohol and drugs on the Barely Famous Podcast with Kail Lowry

The Fuller House star got sober in 2008 after 15 years of sobriety struggles

On the podcast, Sweetin shared that she's grateful for her second chance

Jodie Sweetin always knew she had "more to offer" than just being tied to her sobriety struggles after her Full House fame.

Appearing on the Barely Famous Podcast with Kail Lowry, Sweetin talked about Stephanie Tanner, addiction and recovery, motherhood, and how she rebuilt her life after rock bottom.

While Sweetin noted that she didn't deal with addiction while starring on the hit sitcom, it became all people would talk about in her 20s.

"And because people know who you are, it never kind of goes away from it being in the public eye," Sweetin, 43, said.

The actress battled a copyright and copyright addiction after Full House ended its eight-season run in 1995. She has also been open about her journey with alcoholism.

Despite "millions" of everyday people dealing with addiction, she noted that it becomes more "sensational" if you are a public figure.

"I always say, I would have struggled with addiction issues regardless of being on TV or not," she added. "And to be fair, that gave me some of the ability to be able to find treatment and find help in ways that I might not have had I not worked as a child. But it's very hard [when] you have to make all your mistakes publicly."

The road to sobriety was bumpy for Sweetin, who said she was forced to publicly address her struggles after it was leaked to the press.

“I had gone to treatment in my 20s, and then I had kids, and then I got sober, and then I drank again and then I got sober,” Sweetin explained. “It's been up and down, but it's been 16 years since I've drank alcohol and 13 years since I relapsed on meds with a car accident that I was in."

While "pills were never [her] thing," Sweetin said doctors prescribed her a muscle relaxant after the accident, which caused her to relapse.

Once she was sober again, Sweetin admitted it "was hard" getting "back into acting" because "it was the only thing that people wanted to talk about."

"There were times I was like, ‘Oh, why didn't I just keep my mouth shut? Why didn't I just say I don't want to talk about it, because now it's all that people want to talk about,'" she added.

“But, through it, I got to come back to Fuller [House] and I just never gave up, knowing that I had more to offer than just being some salacious story," she continued.

In an interview with Jezebel in 2022, the actress discussed how conversations about substance abuse and addiction have changed since she first shared her own struggles several years ago.

"I do think in the 20 years it's been since my story came out, we have put in a lot more time and effort into getting to understand the disease of addiction and what it really is and listen to the stories of people who have come out and been honest about it," Sweetin confessed.

The actress previously admitted to PEOPLE that she has been grateful for her sobriety, and how it's granted her a second chance.

"I speak about my experience growing up in the entertainment business, what my life was like after, some of the struggles and things I went through and where my life is today," Sweetin said. "It's a story with a message of second chances and turning things around and being able to overcome some adversity."

Full House aired from 1987 to 1995. Sweetin reprised her role in the Netflix reboot, which spanned five seasons from 2016 to 2020. Full House also starred Bob Saget, John Stamos, Dave Coulier, Candace Cameron Bure, Lori Loughlin, Mary-Kate Olsen, and Ashley Olsen. Everyone, aside from the Olsens, returned in various roles for Fuller House.

Sweetin’s new Lifetime movie, Dateless to Dangerous: My Son’s Secret Life, premiered on June 21.
